History

The Battye Library of Western Australia history information is that Bullock Hills was recorded on maps prior to 1895, and a track to Bullock Hills was recorded in May 1904.

The book Dumbleyung and Districts Pictorial, 2003 also makes mention of Bullock Hills and gives certain credit to the following tale.

We have followed up with the Battye Library, Department Of Land Administration and with a police historian to find out if the following tale is correct.

The answer by all is that they can neither confirm nor deny the report; but it can be called local folklore and hence the naming.

"Bullock teams were used around that time rather than horses to haul out sandalwood. One night, a team of drovers with bullocks spent the night at the base of the Bullock Hills to rest and water the animals. During the night, while the men slept, the cattle broke out of the holding pens and ate poisonous bushes surrounding the hills.

In the morning the men woke to find all the cattle were dead. The men fled in fear. The area was called Bullock Bones Hills after that incident, which later became Bullock Hills."

Breeding Policy

Bullock Hills Simmentals was established on Hamelin Park bloodlines in 1995, breeding traditional Simmentals. The focus of the Bullock Hills Simmental stud is to produce seed stock cattle which perform in a typical Western Australian commercial environment that increases profitability for our own commercial herd as well as our clients. This is achieved by breeding cattle with excellent confirmation ensuring physical longevity coupled with measuring performance and using breeding values to select the best genetic packages.

In the 2010, Bullock Hills introduced Black Simmental genetics to their stud via embryo transfer programs using best available genetics from Bonnydale, St Pauls and imported bloodlines from North America. Further, a handful of better traditional cows were bred to Black bulls. Whether Traditional or Black, the same breeding objectives and selection criteria were used.

By the early to 2024 market forces and a desire to market a single sale line led to Bullock Hills Simmentals to disperse their Traditional stud breeders to focus solely on providing their clients with Bullock Hills clients with highly functional and profitable Black Simmentals. Bullock Hills have invested in some of the best maternal bloodlines from around Australia including genetics from herd matriarchs from Wombramurra, Woonallee and Lancaster herds. Further, they continue to invest in sourcing the best semen from around the world in the pursuit of genetic improvement.
